Hi friends,
I’m so excited to bring you this Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge! I’ve teamed up with 20 other bloggers for this thrift store blog hop. The rules were simple–take an item(s) from a thrift store, yard sale, resale shop etc. and transform it into a new piece of home decor. There was no budget, or theme to stick to so we were free to let our creativity run wild!

While there was no theme or budget for this project, I did have one requirement for my upcycle; it had to be useful / functional. As I’m cleaning out and de-cluttering, there was no way I could justify buying something to “flip” that would just sit in storage after this post went live. So when I came across this mini stair-shelf and could immediately think of half a dozen uses, I knew I had a winner!
Supplies Used
- thrift store shelf
- hammer
- wood putty
- sanding sponge
- white spray paint
Instructions
1. I knew immediately that I could use this mini stair-shelf, it just needed a little makeover.
2. I knew that it could be a functional storage decor piece, but I didn’t need the railing. I originally tried hack-sawing it off, but that was taking too long and wasn’t giving me the result I wanted. I ended up just taking a hammer and popping the spindles out.
3. Since I popped the spindles out, that left a hole in each shelf. I took some wood putty and filled them in.
4. Once the wood putty is dry, I sanded those sections as well as the entire piece so that it was smooth.
5. Because I planned on using it for my jewelry, which is a variety of mixed metals and colors, I wanted it to be a simple backdrop. I applied two coats of white spray paint, sanding lightly in between each coat, and let dry.
6. I hung it up on the wall, added some accessories, and voila!
Be sure to check out my fellow bloggers’ projects too!

Adorable! I don’t think I will ever find a shelf like that, but maybe I can have my husband make a little one! It would make the perfect shelf for right inside our back door, to hold keys and dog leashes!
