Every year, since before I can remember, my family makes wassail to drink during our holiday festivities. I was talking to a friend about it a couple of weeks ago, and they had never heard of wassail before. I was telling another friend about it, and they had never heard of it either. It then occurred to me that wassail wasn’t as common as I thought it was.
Alrighty, ready for a history lesson? Wassail originated from Old England around the 12th century. Wassailing was a tradition of singing and drinking in good health on Twelfth Night, to awaken the apple cider trees and scare away the evil spirits. During these festivities they would drink a beverage of hot mulled cider, which later became known as wassail.
Now, traditional wassail recipes call for brandy and eggs, among other things, and is extremely in depth and complicated. Whereas my family’s recipe is extremely simple and, may I dare say, even more delicious.
- 1 bottle apple cider
- 1 bottle Sprite
- 1/2 cup Red Hots
- 1 - 2 apples, sliced
- 6 cinnamon sticks (optional)
- 1 tsp. whole cloves (optional)
- 1. Place all the ingredients in a slow cooker and cover
- 2. Turn the slow cooker on high heat and cook for 3-4 hours, until the color has darkened, the candy has dissolved, and the fruit is soft.
- 3. I added some cinnamon sticks and cloves purely for aesthetic, but you can add them or leave them out to your discretion.
- 4. Serve and enjoy!
Have you ever tried wassail before? What are some things your family enjoys during the holiday season?
