Hi friends,
Welcome to the 2018 Ornament Exchange & Blog Hop! This year, there are 50 amazing bloggers participating in the exchange. The rules of the challenge were simple: be partnered with a fellow blogger, create a handmade ornament for $15 or under, create a tutorial, and ship the ornament off to a new home!
I was paired with Amanda of Prim and Propah and when I first reached out to her I asked her about her Christmas decor and traditions. She told me that her style is modern and her family uses the colors of blue, gold, and white in their decorations so that’s the direction I headed in.
I have always wanted to make a melted crayon ornament and because I’m an art teacher, I thought it was the perfect ornament to send off to Amanda!
Supply List
- Glass ornament
- Crayons
- Hair Dryer / Heat Gun
- X-Acto Knife
- Oven Mitt
Instructions
1. I had originally planned to get a plain glass ornament and decorate the outside with the colors of gold and white with something I’d do with my Cricut machine. But then I was browsing the aisles of Walmart and I came across these glass ornaments that already had a beautiful gold and white forest scene on the outside. I figured I’d give them a try and I’m so happy I did because I love the end look!
2. Remove the metal hanging tops from all of the ornaments.
3. Because Amanda’s family uses blue, I took out all of the blue crayons from my crayon box and divided them to use in each ornament. Use an x-acto knife to easily slice off the wrappers and break them into small pieces. Drop 5 – 6 pieces into your glass ornament. I also added pieces of white to 2 of the ornaments and pieces of black to the others to create different tints and shades.
4. Once your crayon pieces are in the glass ornament, it’s time to melt! Using a hair dryer or a heat gun you want to apply an even amount of heat to the outside to melt the crayon wax. As the wax begins to melt, swirl the ornament so that the colors coat the inside of the ornament.
5. Pop the top back on and string up with either a hook or a piece of embroidery thread and they’re ready to go on display!
I did all 4 in the package and I absolutely LOVE how they turned out! Each one is slightly different because of the different blues but all tie together because of the forest scene. I hope Amanda loves them!

I love the ornaments. I have a box of clear glass ornaments that I am getting ready to do something with them. You have inspired me to use up the broken crayons my friend gave me.
