Hi friends,
Welcome to the August Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop! The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This past month, I’ve been working on my first day of school outfit that’s entirely crayon themed. I’ve made crayon sneakers and designed a free SVG cut file, but I knew I needed something else to complete the ensemble. I was in my local fabric store looking for some fun art teacher-y fabric, and I stumbled upon this Crayola fabric in the clearance bin. Well I snatched up as much as I could because I finally knew how I would complete my outfit. A circle skirt! I began looking for an easy to follow tutorial and I found this pin from Mood Sewciety. Time to pull out the ole sewing machine!
Supply List
- fabric (amount will depend on waist size and desired length of skirt)
- coordinating thread
- 3″ wide elastic
- straight pins
- tape measure
- poster board
- pencil
- sewing machine
- seam ripper (just in case)
Instructions
1. Use this calculator to figure out how much yardage you need.
2. Measure your waist. Because I was making a full circle skirt, there was an equation I had to follow to get the proper waist measurement for my template. The equation is: (waist length + 2″)/(6.28) = template waist. Starting at the corner of your poster board measure down whatever your final template waist number is and connect the dots so it makes an arc.
2. Now repeat that step, but measure the length of your skirt. You can do this 2 ways. You can measure your length down from the arc that you previously drew or you can do it from the corner again but add your waist length to your skirt length. Cut out your template.
3. Time to cut out the fabric. Because of the print my fabric had, I cut it out differently than the original pin did. I traced the template 4x and cut out four individual pieces. If you have a plain fabric or a pattern where the direction doesn’t matter, you could probably do the fold in quarters and cut once thing.
4. Because I had 4 separate pieces, I had to stitch 4 separate seams. If you have 1 large circle piece, you will need to stitch 1 seam.
5. Sew your skirt together.
6. Like the original pin, I wanted an exposed elastic waistband. Measure your waist and subtract 2″. Cut your elastic to size.
7. Sew your waistband together and pin it in 4 places (North, East, South, and West). Place pins in the same coordinates on your skirt. Match the pins up and sew the elastic to your skirt with a zig zag stitch, pulling taut on the elastic as you sew. Make sure you use a zig zag stitch so that the elastic can stretch out once it’s sewn onto the skirt.
8. Once everything is sewn together, the last thing to do is sew a finished hem!
Alright, I’m pretty sure I need to make about 50 more art teacherin’ themed skirts for the coming school year! They’re super cute, unique, and relatively easy to make!

This is so cool! And I love the crayons. I have been oogling over Modcloth’s school print skirts and dresses. So fun.

I love the skirt and your entire outfit! You definitely need to make more skirts and matching shoes too.
Lauren says
Very cute skirt. Thanks for sharing your tutorial!
Kelli says
Great tutorial and how cool that you are able to make your own clothing to fit your style. I have “played” with a sewing machine in high school and as a young adult and for the life of me struggle to sew a straight line.

So cute! I wish at least once a month that I could sew. That fabric you used is perfect for this back to school season. You look adorable in your new skirt.
Lydia from Lydia's Flexitarian Kitchen says
Really love the simplicity of the exposed elastic waistband. It looks well finished and no need to deal with a casing.
Emily @DomesticDeadline.com says
This is darling! I love the crayons, it’s been a while since I’ve sewed clothes.

That fabric is super super cute.
I’ve never made a circle skirt, but it is on my to do list – I love how swishy they look.
