Hi friends,
Have you ever seen that really cool painted crackle finish? Recently I’ve incorporated it into a client’s project I’m working on and it works so well in the space. But the product I’ve specified is for a commercial environment and is pricier than I’d use for my own personal projects. But did you know you can recreate the look for a whole lot less?! Just by using Elmer’s glue!
Supply List
- Material to be painted (I used bead board)
- Acrylic or latex paint base coat
- Acrylic or latex paint top coat
- Elmer’s glue all
- Various paint brushes
Paint 2 coats of your base color and let dry completely.
Once the base is completely dry, apply a layer of Elmer’s glue. This is going to be where you determine the type of crackle you want. If you want smaller cracks, apply a thin layer. If you want large cracks, apply a very thick layer. Allow glue to get “sticky”.
DO NOT allow glue to dry completely. When the glue is sticky, apply your top coat. Lay material flat to dry.
So easy, right? While it’s not commercially rated and I wouldn’t be able to use it in my client’s restaurant, it’s perfect for DIY projects!
I’m linking up to these great parties!

I’ve used crackle paint products before, but I’ve never tried it with glue. Neat trick.

I didn’t think it would be so easy! I wish it was commercially rated so I could use it for my client’s project, lol.

Wow – that is great, and probably a LOT cheaper than that stuff you buy to make it crackle. Love this idea for small projects! :)
