Hi friends,
If I could, everything in my house would be from Kate Spade. It’s one of my favorite brands. It’s so chic, stylish, and timeless…but I’m broke…so that’ll never happen. Therefore, I have to use what I have on hand and transform it to have that “Kate Spade” look! :)
So I got this floral-y drink dispenser years ago from Wal-Mart, in their clearance section. Definitely not my style, but got the job done for what I needed it for at the time. I honestly don’t even remember why I needed to buy this. Was I hosting a party? Was I just really thirsty? The world will never know.
I took it down to my special spray painting area (aka, my basement / garage) and prepped it for painting. I cleaned it off and I sealed off the nozzle because I didn’t want spray paint in there. Pro tip: anything weirdly shaped that you don’t want spray paint or even regular paint on, use tin foil. You can wrap it around the object and it will form to the shape. #genuis
I spray painted it gold with a primer and paint Rustoleum spray paint. I gave it a couple even coats, allowing to fully dry between each coat.
While the base color was drying, I went upstairs to dig my CriCut out of storage because I don’t use it as much as I should use my CriCut. I stole this tip from my friend Christine over at Where the Smiles Have Been, instead of using expensive vinyl for a template, use $1 store contact paper! Super easy!
I spelled out “cheers!” and placed it where I wanted it to be cut on the contact paper. Any phrase that seems Kate Spade worthy works too. ;)
I applied the contact paper template where I wanted it to be, and spray painted the letters white. I let it completely dry before peeling off the contact paper. Remove very carefully.
Once the letters were dry, I marked off the area with painter’s tape where I wanted a gold “tag” of sorts. Once I got it spaced where I wanted, I spaced various sized rubber bands around the dispenser. I placed them at random to give a “carefree-stripey” look. You can decided what you want to do with the lid. I decided that I only wanted the knob to be gold, so that’s all I taped off.
Once you have as many rubber bands as you’d like on there and everything’s taped off the way you want, spray paint the whole thing white. Spray a couple coats and let dry completely between each coat. Once completely dry, remove rubber bands, tape, and tin foil very carefully. I found it easiest to cut the rubber bands off, rather than rolling them off. Also, do this in an area that will be easy to clean up. There will be dried paint on the rubber bands it it will get EVERYWHERE!
This will be so much more fun to display at parties with my “I’m Happy Every Hour” coasters! What kind of designers do you love? Would you ever create something inspired by them?
